Emergency Care for Orthodontic Patients
Orthodontic emergencies can happen, but knowing how to handle them can make all the difference. While wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances, injuries or appliance issues generally fall into two main categories:
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Occasionally, your braces or appliances might become loose, broken, or bent. If you experience any issues like loose bands, brackets, or poking wires, please call our office during regular office hours to schedule an appointment. For the comfort of all patients, we do not accept walk-ins for emergencies.
Helpful Tips While Waiting for Your Appointment
If a wire is poking or irritating your mouth, cover it with orthodontic wax or gently push it under the archwire using a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
Loose bands or brackets can usually remain in place until your visit. Contact us as soon as possible to arrange a repair.
If an archwire breaks or pokes out, you may carefully bend it back with a pencil eraser or trim it with nail clippers. Call our office if the problem persists.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth
If you experience a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, whether you are currently in orthodontic treatment or not, apply ice immediately to reduce swelling and contact your general dentist right away. An X-ray is usually necessary to assess any damage.
In cases where a tooth has been knocked out, displaced, or fractured, your family dentist is the best first point of contact since they have the tools and anesthesia needed for urgent treatment. Once your general dentist has assessed and treated the injury, we can assist with any necessary appliance adjustments or repairs to restore your orthodontic treatment.
After Office Hours
If you experience an orthodontic emergency outside of office hours and are in pain, please contact our office. We provide information on whom to reach for urgent assistance during these times.
If you have any concerns or urgent issues related to your orthodontic appliances, don’t hesitate to call us; we’re here to help you stay comfortable and keep your treatment on track.
